The first thing to consider for a new company logo is it’s NOT your brand identity. If you’re looking to build a strong following of customers and be known for a great product or service, your logo has nothing to do with it. Your new logo is just a graphic representation of your name, what you actually do is a separate job of its own.
A free logo design can be done quickly and easily if you’re somewhat computer-savvy and have some time to spare. You thought of business name and what you have to offer the world. Next is creating a visual that people can begin to associate you and your brand with.
Logo design can be pricey, but if you have the time to learn a new program that is fairly easy to navigate, such as Canva.com, you can hundreds of dollars. This quick tutorial will cover the basics when it comes to creating a simple cheap company logo with Canva for under $13.
Canva Desktop or Mobile?
We suggest using the desktop version of Canva when designing your logo. It’s easier to navigate the desktop version of Canva, but the mobile version is a powerful tool as well. For this tutorial we’ll assume that you’re new to design and Canva.
Canva.com Sign Up
Head over to www.canva.com/signup. You’ll have to sign up with email to use their service. Find the “Sign Up” options in blue text at the bottom to create a new account. You’ll have three options:
Sign up with Google
Sign up with Facebook
Sign up with Email (what we’ll be doing today)
We are using the pro version of Canva.com which will cost you $12.99 per month (as of 4.9.2021). This unlocks various features that make it easier to create and download when complete. After signing up for the $12.99, you can learn the program and create a simple company logo for under $13. Maybe it will take two months or so, then the cost will only $25.98. That is still incredibly cheap for a logo!
Click on “Create a Design” on the far right of the page.
Three options will appear.
Search. This is where you can search for specifically-sized graphic options, like a logo, Facebook banner or many other options.
Custom dimensions. This is where you can create a design based off specific dimensions for a specific project.
Suggested. This is the option we’ll be using while choosing “Logo” (500 x 500px).
Explore and Navigate
Now you’ll have a blank canvas to work with to start creating your new logo. Canva utilized a drag and drop interface with many templates, text and elements to choose from. There are free options and premium options, which unlock the features and benefits of the website. Again, the images used here are from an account that uses a paid monthly membership.
Start by familiarizing yourself with the left pane. This area is where the tools are located used to create designs on the platform. There are five main tools used which include (from top to bottom):
Here you can find various premade logo designs and ideas. You can choose one and easily customize it with your own text and images, but it will be far from original. Depending on your purpose for the new logo, templates may or may not be the best option moving forward. It is however a great place to start if you’re not too familiar with the software and design structure.
Here you’ll find an area to upload images of your own to use in your logo project. Choose “Upload an image or video” and choose from “Device” (your computer or phone), “Facebook”, “Google Drive”, “Instagram” or “Dropbox”. After choosing your file click on it to have it import into your project.
Stock photos are a great tool for specific designs and types of businesses. There are a ton of ways to utilize them and are helpful when posting to social media or creating an advertisement.
Before continuing with the design, let’s name the project. Click inside the area where it says “Untitled design – Logo” on the top right-hand side of the page. Enter the name of the project and hit enter.
Let’s start by choosing “Elements” in the tool pane and click in the search box. By now you should have a general idea of your company name, acronym and desired color scheme. For the purposes of this tutorial, let’s go with a fictitious business named A&B Construction.
1. Select elements for your cheap company logo
Choose Elements on the left pane (side) of the design options. Then navigate to the search bar above it and type in the letter A and press enter. Locate the following A, or a design of your choice.
After clicking on the A, it will drop it onto your design area. Click on it and hold, then drag to the top-left quadrant approximately as shown. Next, go back to the search bar and type in the letter B. Locate a B with the same style or a matching style to the A. Drag it next to to the A.
2. Add text for your cheap company logo
Choose text in the left pane and the large Add a heading tab. Click in the blue box that appears in the design area and type the company name. There is a text option above to change the font. The text size will be around 38.
We decided to utilize an ampersand symbol to add a touch to the logo. Choose elements again and type “&” in the search block. Scroll until you find the design above or skip if you’re not using an ampersand.
Move the A about 50% higher then the B, and minimize the ampersand symbol and drag it under the A.
3. Now a Shade Effect
Click on the letters to select the text. Locate the effects tab on the top right corner. On the left design pane, choose the lift option. The intensity should be automatically set to 40, which will work fine. Adjust if needed.
4. Download as a Transparent .png File
Once you adjust the logo the way you feel it looks organized and clean, go to the download tab on the top right corner. A feature of the pro version of Canva is you can choose to download files as transparent, which is great for logos and look more professional when used with social media, graphics and your website. The main priority with Canva is getting used to the way the design elements and options are organized. The more you play with designs and explore the website, the better you’ll get. You’ll be on your way to a cheap company logo!
